Dragonball Z was all about being the greatest version of yourself. Goku, the main protagonist of the series, represented a super human who came to earth because his own planet was on the verge of destruction. He was discovered and raised by a humble village of humans, who he was compassionate and sympathetic towards even though he was from another planet, much like Superman. Goku showed us that using your willpower to overcome challenges was not only glorious but a necessary part of life.
Remember that full saiyans start out with their natural monkey tails and that during full moons they transform into powerful giant were-apes. This represents the primal nature of man. It can be powerful when unleashed but it is very reckless, destructive and chaotic. Goku and Vegeta were the last true saiyans who lost their tails during different times of the series. The cutting of the tail symbolized moving on from the primitive state and becoming civilized.
Consider how difficult it was for Goku to achieve super saiyan status for the first time. An evolution of yourself like that does not come easy. Goku was always met with new, more challenging opponents at different stages of his life. Every imminent threat to the planet earth or to his family and friends forced him to train harder and get stronger, and sometimes he needed the help and teamwork of his loved ones to triumph. Achieving super saiyan represented the transcendence of the human into the super human. It represented a new level of evolution which was only possible due to new hardships and challenges. Perhaps the episodes were intentionally drawn-out to emphasize the significance of trying your best in the face of adversity? Maybe the creators had to focus on the epic tensions between fight scenes in order to leave a lasting impression in the minds of young people who watch the show, so that they would remember the feeling well into their own lives? Personally I enjoyed the show myself and even attempted to raise my own power levels in my childhood. But recently I have been doing some reflecting and find that I should now start to embody some of the good traits from previous fictional role-models. Based on recent circumstances I should strive to evolve myself and overcome the current barriers in my life. I believe that things will get much better once I become a better version of myself. Once I am better I will be able to better help others, who in turn can help more people. It's all about raising your power levels, and helping others reach their own potentials once you have reached yours.
